There is a way out!Reader comment on item: The Solace of Poor U.S.-Israel Relations Submitted by Isaac Haskiya (Denmark), Apr 28, 2010 at 03:27 The relation between Israel and the US is one of conditional friendship and a game of give and take. Right now Obama needs IsraelĀ“s obedience in order to guard his flanks in Iraq and Afghanistan and keep his good relations with the Muslim (Arab) world safe. There is certain elasticity in every relalion and today the rubber band is approaching its breaking point; one more violent pull and it will snap. The people of Israel feel that their dependence on this "friend" is costing more and more and ask themselves where it will stop if ever. There is away out, of course, and that is becoming more and more sovereign which equals to becoming les and less dependent politically and economically. A fair strategic co-operation will remain to the advantage of both parties. This cannot be done from Monday to Tuesday; it requires time and a soft hand. Returning to the days when the US said No to weapon and tank deliveries, forced a retreat in 1956 and 1973, paralyzed Israel in making a pre-emptive attack in 1973 (not a nail, said Kissinger), forced Israel to dump the Lavi is nothing that serves the Jewish State in making peace with the Arabs, on the contrary! And Israel remembers! There is only one dialogue partner in making peace and that is the Palestinian Arab. As long as the US will mediate and meddle this party will ask for more and more thinking that Israel cannot afford losing US support. It is not so; times have changed since 1948, 1956, 1973. We read 2010 on the calendar! Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes. Original writing only, please.
