The cost of empire

Sir,

That was a beautiful description. However what you fail to mention is that by the time Britian was approaching 1914 the treasury was hemorrhaging money due to the cost of empire, leaving them unable to withstand the combined financial shocks of WWI & WW II, which ultimately bankrupted them. Unfortunately the spending practices of the last two US presidential administrations are leading America down the same road.
