Reader comment on item: Living Freely in England a Century Ago

He could travel abroad or leave his country for ever without a passport or any sort of official permission.

That is not actually true - and the British Empire was bound to come to an end - a chunk of the world British thought they owned ad didn't. UK education system is still the cheapest in the world - although prices going up soon. Social conditions are not that bad - poverty was lot worse in 1914 and actually so was crime.

You can still leave whenever you want, change money without restriction, there is no id card system as yet, you do not have to

NHS is still there, so is rest of welfare system. Manufacturing was unsustainable after colonialism came to an end and the two world wars.

one thing that actually improved after the WW1+2 boom was social issues - remianing class system went. Poverty was cut down - somthing that was rampant in british Heartland. Even Ghandi came to speak about it - when he visited England!

The only thing is "immigration" and "europe" - repeatedly come up repeatedly a morale downer. Someone needs to sort them out. Unlike Obama - David Cameron has at least got a good grip on economy. i doubt h can solve these two - to satisfaction. Oh, and lame punsihments for cime - that kepps coming up too.

As a small business owner - worst is over economy wise.

There are a lot of worse place to live.... I wouldn't want to be in USA - not if the economy is going to completely collapse.
