Wrong historyReader comment on item: Cyprus on the World Stage Submitted by Ianus (Poland), Oct 28, 2011 at 08:42 Debanjan Banerjee wrote : " historically Russia's main enemy was not Turkey though they did fight many wars but the British Empire and then the German and Austro-Hungerian empires. You should not forget the two World Wars. And do not forget that throughout the last 60 years or so the main enemy of the Russians have been the Western NATO alliance and that is true for even today." I have noticed that the only thing I can rely on is your poor "knowledge" of history. Historically, Russia has waged some twenty wars with Turkey and just one war with the British Empire (the Crimean War) where the latter was Turkey's ally together with France and Piedmont. Russia's wars with Turks and its Tatar vassals in the Crimea inspired by jihad started when there was no British Empire at all and have continued with bloody vicissitudes for four centuries. If you had any sense of history and proportions you would know who the main enemy of Orthodox Russia was and for what reason. Unless Russia opposed the Moslem aggression of the Turks it would be an Ottoman vilayet just like her Orthodox sister-nations of Byzantium, Serbia, Bulgaria and Vallachia . Later it was thanks to Russia's victories that such nations as the Georgians, the Armenians at all physically survived Turco-Persian jihad while the Serbs and the Bulgarians regained their freedom from the murderous Turkish yoke. Note also that in both WWI and WWII Russia fought as an ally of the British Empire while Turkey after betraying the British and the French was either a hostile country or preserved a hostile neutrality trading with Hitler in war materials like chrome and letting his war ships through the straits enter the Black Sea. As to "the last 60 years or so", can you remind me what military and ideological camp Turkey has belonged and continues to belong to ? In case you forgot - it was a major part of NATO and developed as such the second-biggest NATO army. Against whom were the Turks building up their military might ? Against neutral Cyprus?Armenian "separatists"? PKK ? Denigrators of Turkishness" ? Whom do you intend to fool ?
