This passage actually helps Pipes' cause because not only is Jerusalem not mentioned, it's taught that early Muslims were to turn away from Jerusalem and deem Mecca as God's holy place. Replacement theology (and history) at its finest. The true reason for Al-Aqsa is the result of Muslim conquest and dominance as a reminder that at one time Muslims controlled Jerusalem. In time, however I believe the temple mount will be restored in Jerusalem. If biblical prophecy is correct the final restoration of the temple will be a clear sign of end times fulfillment. This fulfillment is a 'legal prerequisite' for the return of the Lion of Judah. So, keep your chins up!

Sura 2:140-143
Or do you say that Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the Descendants (Israel) were Jews or Christians? Say, "Are you more knowing or is Allah ?" And who is more unjust than one who conceals a testimony he has from Allah ? And Allah is not unaware of what you do.
That (Jews and Christians - or better yet, Israel) is a nation which has passed on. It will have [the consequence of] what it earned, and you will have what you have earned. And you will not be asked about what they used to do.
The foolish among the people will say, "What has turned them (Israel) away from their kebla (the temple mount in Jerusalem), which they used to face?" Say, "To Allah belongs the east and the west. He guides whom He wills to a straight path."
And thus we have made you a just community that you will be witnesses over the people and the Messenger will be a witness over you. And We did not make the kebla which you used to face (the temple mount in Jerusalem) except that We might make evident who would follow the Messenger from who would turn back on his heels. And indeed, the change (from Jerusalem to Mecca) is a difficulty except for those whom Allah has guided. And never would Allah have caused you to lose your faith. Indeed Allah is, to the people, Kind and Merciful.
