Egypt had not been overtaken by the likes of the Muslim Brotherhood, Sayd Qutb had not yet gained notoriety and Iran had not undergone the Islamic revolution.

I will have to disagree with you. The Muslim Brotherhood or el-ikhwan el-muslimeen was founded by Hasan el-Bana the grandfather of Tariq Ramadan and it was in 1928. Hasan el-Bana was very impressed by fascism and how the "trains moved on time" in fascist Italy. However, he felt that the path to modernity is through some form of combining islam and fascism (not unlike what was going on at the same time in Maronite Lebanon among the also fascist el-Kata'ib of the Jemayel clan). And in no time violence was used as a way to acheive the goal of having an Islamic state based not on just al-shari3a al-islamiyya but also incorporating the basics of fascism.

And by the late 1940's it was a real threat to the government of Egypt. And in December 1948 the then Prime Minster of Egypt Mahmud el-Nuqrashi (also el-Nokrashi) was assassinated by a member of el-ikhwan. What is most interesting here is that many ikhwanees that was thought to have been linked to the assassination left Egypt as fast as they were able to do so and among them was the father and the mother of Feisal Abdul Rauf the Ground Zero Sheikh and he was born not in Egypt but in el-Keweet which was the family's destination!

The death of el-Nouqrashi was very traumatic to the people of Egypt and it was followed by a crackdown on members of el-ikhwan but by then they were almost every where, the army, the government and even the court of King Farouq. Then in February of 1949 Hasan el-Bana himself was assassinated and Egyptians felt that this was the end of el-ikhwan

However, el-ikhwan were every where. And almost all of the members of al-zubat al-ahrar or the free officers were ikhwangeyeen or members of el-ikhwan and these were the officers that started the 1952 revolution Nasser inculded .

Now we have to go back one step; In 1950 Sayyed Qutb went on a be3tha (it means sending and the sending here means to travel abroad for education paid by the government of Egypt) and he ended in Colorado and he was not impressed with the US or democracy and when he returned to Egypt he was convinced that Egypt should become a Muslim state and it is all outlined in his infamous book ma3alim fi al-tariq the now infamous guide of al-qa3ida and its followers.

So early on Gamal Abd el-Nasser was a friend of el-ikhwan then when el-ikwanees tried to assassinate him in 1954 he turned against them and killed many of them and sent mant of them to jail including Sayyed Qutb who was hanged in 1966.

Nasser kept el-ikhwan under control and they went underground until after his death in 1970

So this menace called el-ikhwan goes back a long time before the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan
