Just another personal viewReader comment on item: Thoughts on the Syrian Downing of a Turkish Warplane Submitted by Albert (Greece), Jun 25, 2012 at 06:41 Firstly, the turkish fighter was not supposed to be where it was. I heard in the media, unfortunately by turkish officials, that due to the high speed that warplanes are traveling FIR violations are common. Well, you can be the judges of this excuse. However, even if that was the case, there is a protocol of engagement rules that is always followed before a SAM attack is ordered. Considering the offensive tactics that the turks follow for decades in the Aegean sea as well as in the Northern Iraqi border where the Kurds are located I would expect them to ignore any kind of such warning. However, the situation in Syria is somehow different due to the turmoil currently existing in the country. Someone could argue that the Turks were used by a third party to check on the Syrian, and therefore the Russian, reflexes. One could also say that now that a NATO warplane is down there is a need for a NATO orientated invasion in Syria. Prior to that incident NATO couldn't possibly claim a leading role in Syria. However, this is all just speculation and my personal thoughts. Given that "nothing is what it seems" I am currently waiting to see where this leads. The thing is that, one way or another, a completely chaotic warzone has been created around Israel and I would expect the Israelis to be very uncomfortable and they should be. If there is an american involvement in this chaos I would dare to argue that the american and israeli interests in the region are for the first time in the history of the middle east and the eastern mediterranean in general are somehow conflicting.
