Proponents of the "a plague on both their houses" approach never fail to grossly exaggerate the capabilities and influence of Al-Qaeda in Syria. Nothing in the past eighteen months points to Syrian society suddenly acquiring a taste for a life under a strict theocracy. Young people in Syria are not risking their lives to exchange the restrictions and tyranny of the Baathist regime for those of a religious one.

Barack Obama today finds himself in the same position as Roosevelt did in WW2, when the latter made the courageous decision to provide material aid to the Soviet Union and Nationalist Chinese forces to fight the great evils of Nazism and imperial Japan. While Obama dithers and engages in endless soul searching, the Russians and Iranians have no such qualms in providing unlimited aid to the Assad regime. Obama's weakness and indecisiveness has been noticed in Moscow and Tehran.

Besides, whatever follows Assad can't be anywhere nearly as bad as the state Pakistan is in, and yet the USA has benefited enormously from its alliance with that failed state. The assassination of Ben Laden wouldn't have been possible without it.
