an instinct of guilt

The West, including Israel, are unconnected to the fighting in Syria. That is contrary to conventional wisdom. Maybe the desire to intervene expresses one of those "sophisticated mechanisms to act on these concerns" in the West. Maybe there is an instinct of guilt on the part of the West to intervene, make things worse and come out more guilty as a consequence. It would restore a worldview of those in the West who want to believe that the West is responsible for all evil, particularly in the Middle East.

If the West were to intervene, anything short of full colonial rule would be ineffective. I believe the people of Syria have a perfect right to die for the future of their country, even if that future is a grim one in the years to come.
