What everybody knowsReader comment on item: The Hagel Nomination: An Open Letter to Sen. Charles E. Schumer Submitted by Dan (United States), Feb 19, 2013 at 23:22 During the last Democratic convention, despite the Dems shocking and unexplained removal of the usual proclamation that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, and the subsequent booing when it was hastily added back in, Sen. Schumer said on TV that "everyone knows [the] vast, overwhelming majority of Democrats favor Jerusalem as the undivided capital of Israel." He called its removal a "mistake of omission." What everybody really knows is that in politics, talk is cheap. When the term "stand with Israel" is used, it is meant in the physical sense, not just the verbal. And when Hagel implies that he will not stand with Israel, by his man y previous statements, it's unlikely he will suddenly change his position. Assuming otherwise would be another "mistake."
