Requesting Schumer to reconsider on Hagel--article by Daniel PipesReader comment on item: The Hagel Nomination: An Open Letter to Sen. Charles E. Schumer Submitted by Penina Sarah (United States), Feb 20, 2013 at 04:27 I strongly appreciate Daniel Pipes' request to Senator Schumer to reconsider his ill-founded position on the Hagel appointment. Prof. Pipes has pointed out the comments in some of the speeches and replies, which Hagel was loathe to show to the Senators requesting them, demonstrating views that belong more in keeping with Der Sturmer caricatures, and the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, infamous forgeries and distortions than to anything we have ever before seen emanating from a major official such as a Cabinet Secretary of the United States government. If Senator Schumer thinks that the appointment of such a man can not have repercussions far beyond the level of "business as usual" he is sadly mistaken, particularly as Israel faces the most fearsome existential threat of its entire history, from Iran, the enemy Hagel has sought time and again to protect, and its proxies, Hezbollah and Hamas, and this same man, in a parallel to the Haman of yore, plots to unilaterally strip the United States of its nuclear land-based missile defenses, and has advocated the elevation of Al-Qaida in North Africa through one of the many organizations of questionable political validity on whose boards he sits, the International Crisis Group. Although he may not listen to the voice of others, surely the voice of Daniel Pipes, a pre-eminent authority on Islam and the Middle East, and a defender of Israel par excellence, should carry some weight with Senator Schumer. If it does not, he will certainly be abdicating his role of "Shomer" Yisrael on the Hill, but we certainly hope and pray that he will reconsider, and that he realizes, as in the Purim story, that it may have been for just such a situation as this, as the dearly beloved, late former Mayor of NY, Ed Koch, intimated, that Senator Schumer attained his position of power and influence, backed by the trust of so many of our people, to face this challenge, and stand for what he knows is right, regardless of external pressures, which in any case, are only temporary, while the weight of his actions can set in motion results, from which the world will have no chance to retreat, once the course of capitulation to a nuclear Iran is set in motion, and the regime in Tehran attains its goal.
