Egypt and SyriaReader comment on item: Arguing against "Limited" Strikes on the Assad Regime Submitted by Prashant (United States), Aug 30, 2013 at 13:42 Dear Dr Pipes, In reference to Sara's note for DNM in your forum, your readers might like to know that between 1958 and 1961 Egypt and Syria unified to become a single country (United Arab Republic). But, in 1961 Syria decided to secede. So Sunni Egyptians do not have to be supporting Shias in Syria when they call the Syrian rebels terrorists. The problem in that part of the world is not that they have factions and politics between factions (that is a universal problem). The problem is that those factions think that killing each other and everyone else is the way to bring peace!! Those Egyptian Sunnis who call Syrian rebels terrorists may be mercenaries or very conservative or little liberal or pro Mubarak but, whatever the case may be, they probably do not understand that random violence is not the way to resolve the problems in Syria or Egypt or anywhere else.
