Franco-German icon of the Left Cohn-Bendit brands Islamists as fascists

Daniel Cohn-Bendit responds to the Paris assassination in the French paper "Liberation".

He brands the islamists as fascists:

Il y a un islamofascisme, ça existe. Ce n'est pas l'islam, ce sont des fascistes, il ne faut pas tourner autour du pot. Comme il y a eu un fascisme venu de la civilisation occidentale, il y a un fascisme venu de la civilisation de l'islam.

Translated:

There is a islamo-fascism, that exists. That is not Islam, these are fascists, one should not mix that up. As there has been a fascism coming out of Western civilization, there is a fascism coming from the civilization of Islam.

Fascism is the most serious accusation the Left has in its arsenal. Note how Cohn-Bendit refrains from reducing Islamism to socio-economic origins, nor does he point at Western intervention in the Middle-East. He refuses to give any sort of explanation. Rather he states that this fascism exists by its own right withing its specific civilization. That signifies a massive swing. The French Left places Islamism among its long standing tradtional enemies.

What will harm the Islamist movement is the well established use of the anti-fascist vocabulary. Up to now, the Islamists themselves determined the vocabulary of discourse with words of Arabic origin.
