Around 40 - 45% of water supply goes toward Khat, the main crop. 85% of the male population is on khat. However, as you indicate, potable water supply is not replenishing itself and they only have for a few years left of drinkable water which is now severely rationed. Country should be dry some time soon. On the other hand, population is not crazy about birth control and is expected to rise by some 30% within next few years. Add to this all health problems they have. All these people on khat does not make for a productive society, except for reproduction of the species. Situation is quite bleek and well-deserved. The recent introduction of Iran in their environment should be interesting re future cultivation of khat. We live in very inteesting times I love it!
