It's true; fascism and communism have not destroyed Western civilization. Nonetheless, both are still live and in some places are flourishing, notably in Russia. It happens despite the euphoria of 90s when it was trendy to dance on the communism's coffin. And again, the "obvious strengths" you mentioned in the beginning may overweight the weaknesses, which are quite possible.
