Europe, in its multinational/multicultural tendencies, has existed under what is described as a complex series of social interactions extending from before the Christian/Catholic influences to after, then being made more dramatically xenophobic as the centuries demonstrated the focus on the differences of societal norms and form instead of looking for the commonalities that would lead to peace. Dark religion formed a dark cloud over Europe and escape was almost impossible.

What actually underlies all of the tensions of history and the antipathies that mar the landscape of humanity with fields of blood is the base character of all of us - if given the chance for determining any kind of future and left to our own devices, service to self usually outweighs service to others and the depression of not being able to escape overwhelms. Improper religious attitudes underscore this and religious practitioners are more apt to default to an atheistic attitude in order to escape.

This why socialism and other forms of forced societal combines typically fail. Just look at how Marx started; then ended as he found no solace to service his religion when he wrote his tomes that offered how to seek religious rebellion.
And the populace that finds itself induced or subjugated under such conditions, will resort to the various means of the self destruction intimated and outright prognosticated by this exchange; and changing venue does nothing except to export and drag the delusion of greener pastures along in refugee fashion.

Historically, this was made different when America was envisioned: the attempt to provide freedom and liberty as was espoused by a loving exposition of the Holy Writ gave refugees of religious persecution a place of hope. Strangely, this former time is no longer treated as it is supposed to be and the American political struggles are a result of a loss of those values. The religious dark cloud from historical Europe that was formerly used to subjugate émigrés in times past is now forming its cloud over America.

When American values based upon the Holy Writ are overwritten, only one place remains to defend and be defended, by the author of the Holy Writ. Only when that is finally learned will the dark cloud be lifted and the issues of humanity's struggles are left behind, even in the future of France.
