Muslims and Islamists (again)Reader comment on item: "The Battle against Islamism Has Not Yet Started" Submitted by ECAW (United States), Jul 30, 2016 at 14:41 Much wisdom from Dr Pipes here but I can never get over his radical distinction between Muslims and Islamists. Islamism, under that name, may be a modern movement but how does it differ from the Islam of Mohammed and his companions using, as they did, both military means and infiltration to establish Islam in Medina and then beyond? If Mohammed came back today which groups would he recognise as most closely resembling his own? I suggest that there is no contest. Also that if Mohammed was only a Muslim, as Dr Pipes has said, then so are modern day Islamists (as they say of themselves); if ISIS and the Muslim Brotherhood are Islamists then so was Mohammed.

If he indeed existed, he lived 1,400 years ago in a tribal society not an ideological one. I don't think it's useful to guess at what he would do today. All I can say is the majority of Muslims reject the idea of returning to his way of life. Reader comments (41) on this item
