Well, Ibn Hisham makes it very clear in his introduction to the biography of Muhammad that he EDITED what was transmitted from Ibn Ishaq. (More later)

No doubt that Muslims don't like Ibn Ishaq because as we are told he was the grandson of a Mesopotamian Christian. But again he is the earliest source of material about the unfiltered life of Quthm aka Abul Qasim aka Muhammad Still Muslims have called Ibn Ishaq a liar. Still being called a liar does not stop Muslims from reading his biography.

Now back to the introduction of Ibn Hisham, He admits that he deleted material from Ibn Ishaq's Sira

واشياء بعضها يشنع الحديث به وبعض يسوء بعض الناس ذكره

Or Ibn Hisham omitted topics that would distress some people

Compare this with al-Tabari who includes embarrassing topics to Muslims including "The Satanic Verses" and the story that Muhammad attempted suicide!

This makes one wonder that the original un-redacted life was really sordid because the picture that emerges from the redacted biography by Ibn Hisham is that Muhammad was a warlord, slave owner, polygamist, cruel etc... And if we read al-Tabari we discover a man who was deceived by Satan and he had a mental health disease that led him to try and kill himself!

So much for the "peaceful and civilized" early Islam
