My sincere condolences

Dear Daniel,

I was very sad to read that your father has passed away last week, two days before another giant of our time, Bernard Lewis.

I was very young in the early 70s but nevertheless already knew about him and his work, and the central part he played in analyzing and defining the Soviet regime. His work was the foundation on which others would implement the policies that eventually lead to the collapse of this ugly regime. To tell you the truth I was quite pessimistic and never thought his ideas would prevail, as he was a very lonely voice at the time.

But he was the proof that one man, brilliant, not afraid to challenge the conventional wisdom of his time and determined not to be intimidated, could change the course of History for the good. He gave hope to all of us who recognized the evil ideas behind the Soviet regime and beyond that he gave us reason to hope that other evil ideologies can be defeated if a few courageous people hold the candles of truth and facts in the face of overwhelming lies and ignorance.

You are very worthy of your father, and I'm sure he couldn't be more proud of who you are and of the essential work you do.
