A warning, in advance, to readers: Alex Jones is a dyed-in-the-wool conspiracy nut. I had removed him from my bookmarks a few months ago; but since the Masters of the Universe (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) all banned him on the same day (collusion??), he is a (still somewhat nutty) hero.

I looked up the link you gave to Ibn Kathir, and found nothing enlightening. The English translation of the Quran passage was full of the "Allah, Most Gracious, Ever Merciful" mantra that appears throughout the book, but nothing of substance beyond that.

Has anyone thought of modernizing Quran? It could be greatly expanded, with stories from the New York Times, the New Yorker and the Washington Post, as well as excerpts from CNN and MSNBC, without changing its essential character. Add a couple of short books by Machiavelli, Hitler and Mao Tse Tung, and you could begin to approach the historical depth and variety of authors in the Bible -- all without any injury to heartfelt Islamic doctrines. I wouldn't undertake such a project myself, mostly out of fear that it would become instantly popular not only with Muslims but also with Leftist Westerners.
