Bigotry is hardly a value of western civilization.Reader comment on item: Europe's Jews vs. Israel Submitted by BorisG, Feb 9, 2019 at 07:38 Austrian Jewish leaders say they oppose FPO because anti-Semitic and pro-Nazi views within the party have not subsided in recent years. More generally, bigotry is hardly a value of western civilization, even if its focus has shifted away from the Jews. Dr. Pipes acknowledges that some (nearly all) of these parties harbor and practice bigotry and xenophobia, but hopes that these are in decline. I don't see this happening. On the contrary, some of these people are emboldened in their bigoted views by their electoral success. Hope is not enough. One must ask WHY their common (and correct) opposition to uncontrolled immigration and Islamism is almost universally accompanied by significant xenophobic, anti-democratic and pro-Putin views. My hypothesis: because they see Putin as a conservative and aggressive ultra-nationalist, and hostile to the Western European liberal establishment, just like them. The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
