Baruch Hashem!Reader comment on item: Ariel Sharon, Escapist Submitted by John W. McGinley (United States), Nov 28, 2005 at 19:57 I am perfectly delighted with your consistent and endemic blind spot when it comes to Ariel Sharon. Normally you are so insightful, accurate, and analytically precocious -- I mean this quite literally -- that I might have mistaken you for a divine being who visits us mortals to set us straight. And such would be to skirt the sin of idolatry. Also, you are incredibly courageous in speaking the truth. If you didn't have a serious blind spot, you would be too good to be true.OF COURSE Sharon's new party will be of short duration. No more than five or ten years before it disappears. And Sharon is most certainly NOT looking for a new party as his legacy. But by starting this new party Sharon will be bringing about not only a great legacy for himself, but also will be bringing about the greatest good for the Modern State of Israel since its founding in 1948. This party is a means to and end. It was necessitated by two political challenges: a). his loss of support in Likud; and b). the passing of the torch from Peres to Peretz ((oh! the joys of transliteration!)). If not met by this genius tactical move of his, Sharon would have lost power. The fact of the matter is that only Sharon can bring about peace with the Palestinians. All throughout and subsequent to the evacuation of Gaza, Sharon's government has relentlessly and successfully tracked down the terrorist leadership and killed and captured many. This will not stop. Whatever emerges, the leaders of the Palestinians know that they will pay a price for terror as long as Sharon is in power. Gaza has never -- either Biblically or in realistic modern terms -- part of what an expanded Greater Israel would be. But Sharon will bring about a settlement which not only assures Jerusalem as the undivided capital of Israel, but also will incorporate into a Greater Israel significant portions of the West Bank.
