The comparison to the Vietnam War (or the American War as the Vietnamese call it) is appropriate. The US could not win in Vietnam for the same reasons that Israel cannot bring itself to utterly defeat the Palestinians: moral uncertainty, public opposition, and international condemnation. In both situations a world power imposes on a weaker adversity. ...
