No Islamists in the PA before Bush? Ha.Reader comment on item: President Bush Replies to My Iraq Critique Submitted by David P. (Belgium), Nov 1, 2006 at 09:47 It's pretty absurd to imply that the party of Fatah, Arafat and Abbas is not Islamist. They put up a thin 'Arab nationalist' front or veneer but the Al Aqsa Martyrs are decked out in Islamic regalia, including Korans, Koranic verses on their heads and Islamic ideas in their writings. Without fanatical Muslim support, Fatah would disappear. Hamas in power demonstrates the will of the Palestinian people and thus brings important clarity to the situation. It is resulting in an isolation of the Palestinians and ultimately a delegitimization of Hamas because the US will not work with them. Were the EU honest brokers, Hamas in power would mean total collapse of the PA. The idea that supporting democracy and elections in the PA encourages Islamists is farcical.
