Vaughan Region's religionsReader comment on item: Permit Muslim-only Enclaves? Submitted by Nettie (United Kingdom), Oct 9, 2007 at 07:13 It's more than 15 years since the Chabad Centre at 770 Chabad Gate in Thornhill (which, like the Peace Village a few kilometres away in Maple, is in the Regional Municipality of Vaughan) opened. It will come as no surprise that Chabad Gate is a road heavily populated by Lubavitcher chassidim, in an area heavily populated by Lubavitcher chassidim, and that the street number of the Chabad Centre is the same as that of the late Lubavitcher Rebbe's New York house, despite the fact that the number is out of sequence with the rest of the street. The children of Chabad Gate and surrounding roads don't pray in the gym of the local schools because they attend private religious academies run by their own chassidic sect. It can be argued that the "Peace Village", street names, pattern of property ownership and house of worship are characteristic of the development plans of Vaughan Region.
