The Democrats & 9/11Reader comment on item: Democrats Unlearn 9/11 Submitted by Clem Ugorji (Nigeria), Jan 19, 2004 at 09:32 Is it possible that the Democratic candidates are merely playing to the (Islamist) gallery or cannot recognise a present national danger even when it stares them in the face? I consider either of these two possibilities to be a treasonable vice. For over 20 years the US goverment pursued a conciliatory policy towards the Islamist ideologues and "revolutionaries", who only got more audacious in their conviction that Americans are a lily-livered evil specie that must be subdued or destroyed by mindless violence. The "force of law" and "police action"advocated by the Democratic candidates, perhaps, would deter a conscientious and rational group of human beings but certainly not a mindless and fatalistic group of nuts whose self-esteem and sense of relevance are measured on a scale of death. I believe that despite the current deluge of homilies about justness and proportionality in the war against terrorism, in a few years, the average American and every objective minded person the world over would look back with admiration and gratitude at the Bush (Jr) presidency for recognising the universality and gravity of the terrorist threat and confronting it with sufficient courage, even at the risk of losing global popularity and reelection. This is the stuff true leadership is made of. History is almost always inclined to smile favourably on such leaders long after they are gone.
