I don't know that Mailer calling 9/11 perpetrators "brilliant"--alone-- should place him in this category of losers. I'm guessing here that by "perpetrators" he meant to say "planners" , as anyone with above- average intelligence could have carried out the plot, but there is no question that the plot itself was brilliant. And simply describing it this way does not, to my mind, indicate that he is responding to the violence and brutality with exhilaration. Sounds to me as if he was responding with a very well chosen adjective, the result of which should be that we all realize that we underestimate the enemy at our peril.
