why not Eskimo law?Reader comment on item: Islam and Democracy - Much Hard Work Needed Submitted by the Grand Infidel of Kaffiristan (Australia), Feb 14, 2011 at 07:20 Mr Ghulam, writing from India (possibly never having even lived in the west??), offers 'sharia' as being a remedy for problems he perceives as exisiting in western legal systems: "Sharia with its basics intact should be considered as a reform movement ..." Why do YOU think it should (besides the fact that you, as a muslim - are biased.? And why should we not also try say the Japanense legal system, or the Chinese legal system - or the legal system of let's say - the Eskimos? "...to cleanse Judeo-Christian society of its various aberrations, introduced in the name of modernity. " Which aberrations - and aberrations from what - an Islamic ideal?? "....The historical pendulum swings between rights and duties, while prohibitions are not only ignored but exploited to cater to the bestiality of human waywardness." What 'bestiality of human waywardness' do you mean? A fine example of that could be having a system of law that was worse than neolithic in principle and practice. Such a system that amputated limbs for crimes of property theft, stoned people to death because someone did not like some unrelated person's sexual antics, or hangs them to death because they don't like gays, or flogs them for some other perceived indiscretion. "...The biggest loss engendered by modernity is the spiritual content of religious experience. " But how would YOU really know what is going on inside of the people who live in a non-muslim and non-Indian 'modernity'? I guess when you look over the border into non-modern but highly Islamic Pakistan - you see the fullness of 'spiritual experience' - and would like it spread throughout a world you do not understand? "...That loss cannot be compensated without opening a line of communication to the human need to belong to a higher being, accepting that humans have but limited power to comprehend the universe around us." and because your belief system tells you that sharia is a good thing and the Arabian caravan raiding last 'prophet' and scimitar wielding bedder of a child bride has recommended it - and you for whatever reason have bought into this belief system - you think every one else must have it? What if they say no - does it make you upset in any way? And what if there was a wide availability and freedom to practice and search through any and all belief systems and religions in the West? Would that not be preferable to your (Mr Ghulams) proposition that one particular system which he favours, be introduced ?
