Islamic Threat to the World?

Reader comment on item: Predicting Middle Eastern Politics

It would be useful and welcome if Dr. Pipes would publish something in book form to reassure the West that we are not going to become slaves to radical Islamists nor over run by them. I wish the media and the governments would simply point out that no way can they get control of the wealth, military, and the power in most countries, simply because those assets are owned and controlled by private interests, not the hordes of Islamic immigrants.

After all, where are the modern weapons of war manufactured? Certainly not anywhere in Islam-dominated countries, nor by ignorant European followers of their prophet. As Churchill once pointed out, the West has science, technological superiority, and education, while the Muslim masses have nothing much but hatred and violence. No way could any number of them pose a serious military threat within or without western democracies, even if they could agree among themselves on anything more than hatred of America, Israel, and freedom.

There is no doubt that a series of tragic massacres and outrages at the hands of the militant Islamics must and will happen before the leaders of Europe and the other democracies will finally wake up and smell the Arabicas; but once that happens it will not take more than a resolute will to kick those violent ones back into the dark ages and the deserts from which they originate.

Daniel Pipes replies:

I do wish I could write such a book, but a more likely one would attempt to awaken Westerners to the dangers their face. Alarm, not reassurance, is the greater need.
