Questions regarding your article 'Egypt's real Ruler'Reader comment on item: Egypt's Real Ruler: Mohamed Tantawi Submitted by Doug Mayfield (France), Jul 11, 2012 at 07:10 I read and enjoy Mr. Pipes' commentaries and I salute Ms Farahat, whose testimony to the US Congress I have seen, for her efforts on behalf of a more free Egypt. But I must say that I am puzzled by their recommendation that ...Western governments should adopt a policy of pressuring SCAF to permit increasing genuine political participation.' Why would SCAF listen? And if they began to allow more freedom, would not their partners, the Muslim Brotherhood, simply sweep them aside in a soft, or hard, coup of their own? (I don't wish to seem fatalisitic but I think that it's unrealistic to expect any members of the Obama administration, some of whom strike me as overtly anti-freedom, to even make the attempt to influence the Egyptian government.) Thanks, Doug Mayfield Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes. Original writing only, please. Comments are screened and in some cases edited before posting. Reasoned disagreement is welcome but not comments that are scurrilous, off-topic, commercial, disparaging religions, or otherwise inappropriate. For complete regulations, see the "Guidelines for Reader Comments". Daniel Pipes replies: It's our contention that a gradual process of democratization can bring moderate forces to the fore.
