NEW KIND OF DEMOCRATReader comment on item: Why I Am Voting Republican Submitted by Martin Schwartz (United States), Nov 5, 2012 at 12:17 Mr. Pipes: I believe you are ignoring an entire new class of democrats. As opposed to the more conservative blue dog or Scoop Jackson democrats from the past, there is a new, post 60's group of democrats: socially very left but on international issues, Islam, Israel...seeing our Euro allies as immobilized etc. etc. - we are very realistically sane. I hesitate to use the word to the "right" or "conservative" because if you are a sane person today you recognize that Islamic fundamentalism is a grave threat and another totalitarian historical movement that has to be stopped. I and many others fall into this group. We see Republicans as economic thieves and not playing with a fair deck - whining to get government off their backs on one hand and yet hypocritically asking for tax breaks and bailouts when things go wrong in the free market. On abortion, again the same hypocrisy but now on a personal level. And yet, we see some democrats and liberals as wimps internationally. They are ready to hold hands and sing kumbaya with those trying to kill us -- carrying the mistaken belief that we should 'just give peace a chance' with everything. These liberal/tleftists don't see that there are people out there with evil and destruction in their hearts. People masguerading under the guise of religion or social justice - but who are nonetheless dictators. Whether left or right. I don't have a name for this class of democrats because we cut across ideological boundaries. Perhaps you can come up with one. We are left-wing, baby boomers that came of age in the 60's or slightly after, former pot-smokers, supporters of women's right to choose, pro-government regulation to keep the scammers in check who only want open markets when it suits them, but also very small business, pro-free enterprise oriented requiring a fair deal for all, big and small - not a stacked deck. Left of one hand….right on some issues. For this election, the economics win out and this class of democrats would never go back to the failed, trickle down policies of the Republican past. So we we are Obama supporters - even feeling he should have pinned the Republicans more for their wall street created fiasco last election. But at the same time, we will be right back and quick to pressure and even attack Obama and his folks if they win – when they don't get it right internationally and on Israel and Islam.
