Turkey doesn't care.Reader comment on item: Talking Turkey Submitted by Ianus (Poland), Jan 7, 2013 at 14:15 Dear Alexandros , I agree it would be pretty easy for Turkey to prove it's democratic and humanist and not a nightmarish barbarian atavism it has proved over and over again with its genocides,evil-doings, aggressions and lies it is . But, frankly, does Turkey care ? I am sure it doesn't. To my mind democracy was just a convenient tool and trap. It was a tool used to get Western weaponry and technology and a way to teach its people how to operate them. And it was a trap to hoodwink the West with. "We are a democracy. If you don't give us more weapons and money, bad Islamists will take over and there will be no democracy". The deeper reason for failure of democracy in Turkey is that when one changes a political system without changing the population as Kemal did, what one gets in the upshot is a regime in the image of the previous regime. And what regime was it ? Oriental despotism, jihad, Abdul Hamid II -style police state and Islamic obscurantism. Wasn't Kemalism made exactly in that old image ? Now that it is almost gone it turns out that nothing has really changed with its demise. Democracy or no democracy Turkey is what it has always been - a mortal threat to peace and civilization.
