Loose CannonReader comment on item: The Good News in Turkey Submitted by Mozere (United Kingdom), Jun 4, 2013 at 23:48 Mr Erdogan the normally astute politician finally succumbed to pride and hubris and managed to wake up the apathetic Turkish electorate. He kept on invading peoples private lifestyles, the spectre of alevi sunni fighting due to Syrian crisis, references to two drunken men,etc was enough to enrage even a most placid electorate. The Turkish bourgeoisie must regret not keeping him on a shorter leash,as he can be bit of a loose cannon when he is angry. The late Mrs Thatcher also was ousted as a result of poll tax riots after a 13 year economic success story. Turkey finds herself in the same position as the UK was in the early 90s.The opposition unelectable and no obvious leader in sight in both cases.I am a CHP voter but even I find a coalition of statist chp and nationalistic mhp scary. One will kill off the entrepreneurial spirit of Turks, the other will stoke up PKKterrorism. Mr. E is now a lame duck. Will we see the rerun of Mrs.T saga? Will Mr E be ousted in a "palace coup" by the AKP grandees. But one thing is sure the Turkish capitalists and the middle classes cannot afford a lengthy disruption to their economic activities.Any option will be considered to this end Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
