solidarity, deterrence and defiance

The US State Department demonstrated their very own manner of solidarity with Muslims across the world fasting during ramadan. While muslims do not eat, the State Department chose not to think during daylight. To conclude the month the State Department celebrates the end of ramadan by closing down the embassies.

Such display of piety, chosen out of free will, will not go unrewarded. Next year will see US embassies enjoy deterrence and protection. 2014 Iran will place US embassies in muslim countries under their very own nuclear umbrella during ramadan and the subsequent celebrations. It will be more of a nuclear burqa, some Westerners may say.

Regardless of paparazzis, Al Quaeda threatening to blow up the Brooklyn Bridge, despite the prohibition of singing and dancing during ramadan, barely dressed and unveiled, Mrs Carter, not President Carter, exposes herself to the public. Her mission: make people happy for an hour or two, no matter what, no matter who.

That is the spirit by which US entertainment commands more power than the US military. Courage flows from cheerfulness.
