London pubsReader comment on item: A 1914 Novel's Prescient Vision of Londonistan Submitted by Philip Witriol (United Kingdom), May 28, 2014 at 08:49 Thanks for letting us know about this book. Incidentally, there are many reasons why 90 pubs close every year in London, but one never given by those seeking to protect them is the changing demographics of the city. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes. Original writing only, please. Comments are screened and in some cases edited before posting. Reasoned disagreement is welcome but not comments that are scurrilous, off-topic, commercial, disparaging religions, or otherwise inappropriate. For complete regulations, see the "Guidelines for Reader Comments". Daniel Pipes replies: It's actually about one thousand pubs a year throughout the country. But the key here is the ban on smoking and changing social habits, not Muslim pressure:or changing demographics. For the role of the smoking ban, see http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/peteroborne/100255698/the-smoking-ban-killed-the-british-pub-this-vandalism-is-labours-defining-legacy/ Reader comments (25) on this item
