Liberal American Jewish Support for Israel DwindlesReader comment on item: Does Israel Need U.S. Jewish Support? Submitted by Ilbert Phillips (United States), Apr 19, 2016 at 05:02 Supporting Israel requires the ability to have deep thought, a clear understanding of good and evil, and a willingness to expect both sides (Jews and the Muslims) to adhere to Western standards (the proper treatment of women, children and gays). It does not hurt to have family in Israel: I have two married adult children and 10 grandchildren who are Israeli citizens. That creates an emotional tie. Progressive religious Judaism for too many years emphasized liberal political practices as the reason to be Jewish. Young Jews see no difference between being Jewish and a Democrat. Being a Democrat eliminates the need to identify as a Jew. AIPAC decided a few years ago to open up its membership to non-Jews who love Israel to broaden its base. One of the biggest dividers between American Jews and Israelis is the fact that none orthodox Jews have little if any religious standing in Israel. This is particularly annoying for female and gay Jewish clergy. As a result of this religious split, I find most that far too many liberal American Jews do not know that much about Israel.
