As a practising Catholic living in Canada who has visited Israel, I feel I can answer your question about Christian support for Israel: it comes from a number of better informed Christians (often Conservatives) who understand the challenges faced by the Hebrew state and the recognition of our Judeo-Christian heritage.

Since Pope John Paul II, Christian leaders have made it a point to denounce antisemitism (including the parts in the Gospels that tend to promote it). Even Pope Francis, the lefty, has said clearly that anti-Zionism is the same as antisemitism and that Israel has the right to defend itself.
