we do all need someone "serious" in chargeReader comment on item: Ted Cruz for President Submitted by Anne Julienne (Australia), May 2, 2016 at 19:03 Daniel, as several commenters at the NRO page have asserted, this endorsement is late, Rubio having dropped out in mid March. I suspect this hesitation arises from the fact that there are controversial aspects to Cruz. Indeed, I'm astonished at just how much so many people hate him. The latest polls are not looking good for Cruz. If, as expected, he loses badly again, he'll need all of the "unusual resolve and courage" (at the end of your list) in order to hang on in. I certainly am determined to hang on in. I'm a fan of Caroline Glick and she's been supporting Cruz for a long time now, writing in late January that: "Ted Cruz has proven that he alone has the courage and the competence to lead an American restoration." I also have a huge admiration for the courage and determination of ZOA's Mort Klein who said in mid April: "Cruz is a serious man. You wouldn't be embarrassed about anything if he was president." For me, it's not a negative that Cruz has a strong religious vision. He's too smart for that vision to be a shallow enthusiasm, not well thought through. Although, in many ways, I feel strongly at odds with Islam, I do suspect that there is truth in the idea that political direction must be allied with religious vision, perhaps even (at least slightly) subordinate to it. The only place on earth that I can see a new and viable religious vision emerging is in Israel. The over-arching Jewish "glue" that holds the community together allows for a melting pot of traditional values and futuristic vision. Atheists and theists jostle together in the market place of ideas. Muslims and Christians are included. Eatern religious visions are included. Israel is embattled, however, and she needs someone like Cruz in charge of the largest material power on earth. I still believe she will manage, even with a Trump, even with a Clinton. However, a lot less blood will spill if someone "serious" is in charge. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
