You are not alone. The talking head former military leaders and intelligence officers appearing on Fox News last Friday were strongly in favor of the coup. Erdogan was uniformly referred to as the "bad guys" and the would-be insurgents (if they really existed and the "coup" was not a sham set up by Erdogan in order to conduct a purge of suspected traitors) were the "good guys."

I felt the same way, as did most of my friends. Obama's sympathies are with the Muslim Brotherhood - of course he's supporting Erdogan.

Yes, Turkey has the largest European military in NATO. I question Erdogan's commitment to NATO. Certainly, Putin would prefer division (keeping Erdogan in power) rather than unity in NATO, notwithstanding Turkey's shoot-down of a Russian jet..
