Was the attempted coup genuine?

I completely agree with Dr. Pipes' assessment of Erdoğan, and lament the failure of the coup. However, I must wonder as others have speculated whether the coup was falsely contrived by Erdoğan himself, as a ploy to then purge the Turkish Military of many officers he considered disloyal, and to consolidate power. Indeed, these measures are already in effect.

The alternative is to view the coup as horribly mismanaged and grossly incompetent. The Turkish Military does not have this reputation.
