Israel will inevitably have to fight againReader comment on item: The Key Issue of Hamas vs. Israel Submitted by Doug Mayfield (United States), May 27, 2021 at 12:18 Thank you for the article. If history has proven anything, it is that in order to defeat an ideologically driven enemy, you must achieve total victory and unconditional surrender. Whether in WW2 or the Anerican Civil War, the vanquishing of Shintoism, Nazisism, those who supported slavery, had to be utterly complete in order to eliminate the totalitarian ideology and change the conquered countries or areas into free states. Despite its military success, Israel has done no such thing with Hamas, so like a weed, which if pulled up without removing the roots, inevitably grows back, Hamas will rearm and attack Israel again. In this sort of war, there is no substitute for total victory. Israel should have taken and ruled Gaza while, no matter what the casualties, including civilian, eradicating Hamas. That Israel did not do so will lead to the war continuing.
