Renox: It is Surat Ali-Imran: 110 not 119 and the Doctrine of الامر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكرReader comment on item: Nation-building in Afghanistan, Iraq Was Never Going to Work Submitted by dhimmi no more (United States), Sep 21, 2021 at 14:58 You wrote: >The Family of Imraan (sura 3: verse 119). Here it is in Arberry's translation, though I have modified it extensively to reflect my own interpretation of the original Arabic: In it, Allah acclaims the Community of Believers and charges them with the leadership of Man: ========================= Did you mean: Surat Ali-Imran: 110? Quran 3:110 can be rendered as: You were (see al-Tabari's Tafsir) the best nation brought out for the people. You order (what is) right and you end (what is) forbidden and you believe in Allah. And if the People of the Book have believed it would have been better for them. (Among them) those that believe and most of them are immoral/corrupt. Check this: https://quran.com/3/110?translations=20%2C21%2C22%2C17%2C18%2C19%2C95%2C40%2C84%2C85%2C101 al-Tabari believes that the word Kuntum كنتم (pl. past tense for "you were") should be Antum انتم (pl. present tense "you are") However, the most important part of his Tafsir is: عن ابن عباس قوله: " كنتم خير أمة أخرجت للناس ". يقول: تأمرونهم بالمعروف: أن يشهدوا أن لا إله إلا الله، والإقرار بما أنـزل الله، وتقاتلونهم عليه، و " لا إله إلا الله "، هو أعظم المعروف = وتنهونهم عن المنكر، والمنكر هو التكذيب، وهو أنكرُ المنكر. This can be rendered as: From Ibn 'Abbas (the cousin of Muhammad and Hibr al-Umma): "you were the best nation brought out to the people." He (Ibn 'Abbas) says: You order them to perform what is right, truly that they witness that there is no god except Allah, and accepting what was sent down from Allah, and you FIGHT them about it. And "There is no God except Allah" it is the best (of what is) right. And you end what is immoral/corrupt and the immoral-corrupt is the lying/denial This is the infamous Doctrine of: الامر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر https://www.islamweb.net/ar/fatwa/427021/%D9%82%D9%88%D8%A7%D8%B9%D8%AF-%D9%81%D9%8A-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A3%D9%85%D8%B1-%D8%A8%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%B9%D8%B1%D9%88%D9%81-%D9%88%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%86%D9%87%D9%8A-%D8%B9%D9%86-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D9%86%D9%83%D8%B1 This is a verse that Salafis and members of the Muslim Brotherhood quote to justify atrocities and violence. I urge readers to google this doctrine الامر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر here is a good link that explains it very well https://ar.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A3%D9%85%D8%B1_%D8%A8%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%B9%D8%B1%D9%88%D9%81_%D9%88%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%86%D9%87%D9%8A_%D8%B9%D9%86_%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D9%86%D9%83%D8%B1 PS: Here is Quran 3:119: https://quran.com/3/119?translations=131,149,84,167,206,47
