Mixed prioritiesReader comment on item: From the Halls of Academia Submitted by Don Canham (United States), Jan 27, 2003 at 00:30 I fully agree with everything that Daniel Pipes has to offer. His ability to grasp knowledge is vastly superior to mine. He has the staff and the resources. Not to mention the integrity. When I hear or read pundits, professors and mostly Liberal pedagogues spout off about how the United States is such a mean and ugly country I am stunned. I can't believe that they are as intelligent as they think they are. They deplore the tactics of politics when it doesn't go their way. They all seem to have some personal axe to grind against the United States trying to show people the advantages of Democracy, and then give us reasons why we are really the bad guys. Most of these demagogues seem to be educated, some are professors and others are not. Being a professor of one or more subjects doesn't mean you know ALL subjects. It's great to sit in a classroom or write a diatribe expounding your interpretations of why we are so bad. These same people seem to think that the rich should give everything to the poor. But alas, that doesn't mean themselves. It seems a rich person is anyone who makes more money than them. And a poor person is someone who makes less than them. For sure they are less educated. Russia tried that and it didn't work. Just look at public figures. How many of them did something to enrich themselves in the private sector. When a despot such as Sadaam Hussein murders his own people, when he has some seven billion dollars in a hidden bank account, when he alone keeps his people ignorant of the real world, isn't he a "bad guy?" Bill Gates built his fortune by hard work, and lots of it. Is he now a "bad guy?" How about Tom Edison? Where did he get his money and fame from? Did Henry Ford gain his reputation from his dad or did he figure a way to build a better car? When people realize how many people, Americans and the rest of the world, have improved their lives by these entrepeneurs can't they realize that they couldn't have done it without being in a free and open Democracy? All you have to do to understand this is just look at all the other countries in the world. Would these pundits, professors or liberals have the rights that we have? Would they be heard anywhere else. Try Africa where the Tutsi's hate the Hutu's and kill millions of their black brothers annually. The Arabs (mostly Muslims) have been killing each other for centuries or at least since people learned to record history. What if the United States went back to a closed society, one where we just took care of ourselves. How many regimes would topple if we didn't send a military presence to their wonderful countries? What if we put up a Berlin wall or a wall like the great wall of China to keep everyone out? Foolish? Maybe so, but when people are dying to do anything to get into this country and we still accept the poor and the hungry, and the downtrodden, it has to say something to the demagogues who belittle this country. Hey, the planes and ships are always looking for people who want to travel. Get on board if you think there is a better place, then you can really throw stones in safety. Look at Palestine, they throw rocks every day, and aren't they the better for it?
