Dear DonvanReader comment on item: An Unveiling: Separate, but Acceptable? Submitted by Spotter (United States), Dec 23, 2006 at 04:33 Ever look at the Christian nativity scene? Do you take notice of what the Virgin Mary is wearing? It' a hijab. A respectful form of modesty, not unique to Islam. Ever see a video clip on TV, depicting christian women in eastern european nations? They are covering too. I am a muslim-american woman, reverted by choice, not for marriage. There is no difference in purpose between a habit and a hijab, it is all modesty called upon by our Lord, the same God of Moses, Abraham, Jesus and Mohammed (may peace be upon them). My point is that I dont HAVE to be a nun, to practice this simple act of devotion. That is a ridiculous notion. The Holy Bible calls for modesty as well, and if the pope didnt intervene in the 1960s, women might still be covering their hair while in God's House. I am in no way implying that women who don't cover are less devoted-for one can NEVER, EVER judge another person's piety. Furthermore, I do not believe that such humble practice should be reserved as ritual for any specific religious group.
