Dear Donvan part two!Reader comment on item: An Unveiling: Separate, but Acceptable? Submitted by Spotter (United States), Dec 23, 2006 at 04:56 Quoting Donvan: "Hijab" is a political statement and a symbol of oppression and "Apartness" and the enslavement of women. Wake up..." Hijab is NOT a political agenda, nor is it a symbol of opression, or a fashion statement. We are not slaves. Has it ever occured to you that some examples you may see might be imposed culturally rather than religiously??? You cannot generalize an entire group of women based on your opinions, especially when we know, throughout life, that there are some individuals who will take an idea, concept or law and RUN with it to serve their own selfish needs. It takes courage and healthy self esteem to wear hijab, in a society where less is considered more. Hijab is likened to the habit, in principle: modesty. This is example is not meant to minimize the importance of nuns, their devotion to God, or their intense and honorable study of their faith. Hijab is not a burqa or a niqab. The face is visible, which poses no security threat to anyone. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
