It's cowardice

Your essay basically concludes that "pacifism, self-hatred, complacency – deserve attention." I think you miss the main problem, which is cowardice. Just plain cowardice. This crowd will surrender to anybody rather than risk death or injury for anything. All of the above "reasons" are the cover of choice for fear; a display costume designed to keep everyone from knowing what they really are. Keep in mind that most of the Viet Nam protesters were basically afraid to go into combat so they chose a "palatable" shroud to display to the public and themselves.
