To Susan: I have started with the assumption you are always right!Reader comment on item: How the West Could Lose Submitted by Plato (India), Feb 18, 2007 at 13:11 "thanks for admitting that it was pretty stupid to call me imperialistic, which is by the way the typical word used by communists and third worlders (such yourself)" I admitted that? My English compostion requires post graduate-level correction. I searched through my post to see if I had said that, I thought I said you were imperialists of a lesser variety compared to the others. But if you say it I have written (in invisible pixels?) that I admitted that it was pretty stupid to call you imperialistic, who am I to argue, you are the teacher. "why not admitting you have a chip on your shoulder because your 3rd world country has been conquered in the past (and this way your people received medicines, progress giving nothing in exchange) instead of diverting the subject to communist way of thinking of colonialism and imperialism?" Yes we have not just a chip but a block on our shoulders. As you yourself pointed out somewhere all countries have been conquered sometime or the other. But in most cases those conquerers quickly became part of the landscape. Whereas Europeans on conquering Asian or African countries lorded it over them from Europe drained the countries of the natural resources, destroyed the local industry. Africa of its resources of gold, diamonds, copper, uranium. You gave medicine in return. Oh what a great recompense. Africans are so healthy now. You gave progress. The progress is there for all to see for those who have eyes. In Asia, especially India, the local industry was in many cases extinguished. The textile weavers producing some of the finest material were destroyed by favourable conditions for British imports. And progress in India. Read about the famines during the British rule. You are very well informed Susan. "I have never been amnesic in my whole life, it's leftist communists like yourself always pointing the finger at colonialist west, rather than the crimes of your own kind of people."Susan, the 'white man's burden' shines through this post "Well, let's start from the true assumption that you are always wrong. Secondly, it was also the church that abolished inquisition, restored Galileo, pushed to abolish slavery and gave a kick to communism. So what? Oh I see, by being very amnesiac about all this you cannot stand up on a plate and repeat the old mantra that all religions are evil and your personal favourite one "the western world is to be doomed because of colonialism"."As I have pointed out to you before do you see any difference between what I have underlined and Muslim reasoning and logic? Go easy on your Muslim studies. You will slowly turn into what you hate most. You (I mean the Church) set up the inquisition, let it brutalise people for years and then abolished it, you harass a great scientist and then let him quitely live out his life. I may be wrong but I thought it was the Protestant British who worked hard to eradicate slavery. Why would the Church not kick communism, communinsts rightly realised the Church was selling 'opium' to the people to keep them on a constant high and was trying to get them to kick the habit. That 'opium' was a livelihood for a world-wide empire, sorry, organisation."...your personal favourite one "the western world is to be doomed because of colonialism".I have no clue what that means. Please provide me a tafsir. "I don't talk to muslims, other than to offend them. There is no contact with me and those people."I see the beginnings of a new caste system. Contact with Muslims will pollute you? The Brahmins always did their best to offend the lower castses. "If to get rid of them I have to become like them, then be it. I have no intentions to become like yourself."Then so be it? Yes you become the mirror image of them, only there is a lateral reversal, right becomes left and left becomes right. Great! "actually the opposite, the word muslim to me is like nazi to a jew. The muslims are killing us, not the opposite. The distorted view of the situation tells it all about you." So Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon, West Bank and Gaza are all illusions conjured up by David Copperfield. "unlike yourself busy self-loathing and watching cheap tv shows I had to google intensively to know who this goody was. I am not interested in your eating habits etc., I merely talked about what you portrayed here, lies, propaganda, misinformation, finger pointing at the faults of the west as source of all problems, self-loathing. That is collectively "your habits". Susan, your googling is getting rusty. Otherwise you would have noticed that that silly voyeuristic show was discussed in the the Mother of Parliaments and also in the parliament of the largest democracy and the press of US of A. I did not have a clue about what the Big Brother show was until I read about it in the mainstream media. What do you read with your daily cappucino? And I did all that, lies, propaganda, misinformation, finger pointing (yes I did mention fingers but in another context)? Thank you, I did not know i have all those hidden capabilities. "The fact that some people in the 3rd world like yourself agree with you is because they don't feel proud that someone else brought civilization to them." Oh so the West brought civilisation to the 3rd world. And we have to be happy we were conquered and brutalised for centuries for the 'civilisation' you brought us. Apparently you have not heard of China, Japan, India, Korea, Egypt, Persia, and the people who invented writing, right there in Syria/Iraq. And you had informed me about my madrassa-type education. It seems to have been just slightly better than Sunday Cathecism. And the Western civilisation just in the last century gave us your very own Mussolini, and the very civilised land of Kant, Goethe, Neitze, Max Planck, Einstein, Hisenberg also gave us people who made lamp shades out of the skins of Jews, and what else? It shames me, a lowly 3rd worlder, to remind you, a 1st worlder, of them because I also as a member of the human race feel ashamed that I am member of a race that could reach that level of barbarism in the 20th century. The Chinese, Indian and Japanese civilisations have existed almost since time began. The Egyptian and Persian ones were swallowed up by the religion of the people you are prepared to become the mirror image. Oh yes Susan us 3rd worlders are very well aware of the great 1st world civilisation. That's why we loathe ourselves, and watch cheap tv shows coming out of the 1st world."again it's a fault of the west, again same old babbling. Grow up and take responsibility of your own failures."Forgive our babbling, we 3rd worlders are babies compared to the civilised 1st world. We are looking up to you (if you will deign to) to hand hold us to reach acceptable levels of civilisation. I expect you will pat us on our heads when that happens. "Told you the roman empire had great conquests, I am not denying evidence, pretty much the whole europe was Roman. Where did I deny that?" Where and when did I ask you that question. Is it this statement? Muslims deny they are conquest-happy, they are only peaceful Allah believers. Just go on denying you conquered anyone or colonised anyone against all the evidence. As I have been telling Noah, Muslim is as Muslim does. You regret that you could not rampage across the territories of miserable Asians and Africans and bring in the goodies (booty) for your country like the Brits, Spanish and other European brothers. Yes I can see why you see yourself as a lesser patriot."I am talking about Somalia, Libya not about the the Roman Empire. I thought it was quite obvious I was talking about modern imperialism. Excuse my 3rd world stupidity, you 1st worlders are far superior to us. I made the mistake of not spelling it out in precise mathematical detail. "plato, the past is not the present tense. If I say Islam was a violent cult is not the same as saying Islam is a violent cult. If I say muslims used to kill christians it's very different than saying muslims kills christians. Time matters"Susan, you know I am dense in these matters. If you have the time and the inclination please explain what that means. "Why have you not completed ‘it was firstly used?" the term kamikaze is of japanese origin, the term is itself japanese, does this mean the japaneses are kamikazes?" My statement: As you yourself pointed out fascism is a general term for a particular kind of government but the name was first used by the government of Mussolini. Clear so far? The term kamikaze is a Japanese word used for a specific action. If you as an Italian carried out that same action the Japanese would say you carried out a kamikaze action. Not that all Italians are kamikazes. Kemo sabe? Since Italy was ruled by Mussolini who conducted his government in a fascistic manner the Italian government of the time was fascist. Kemo sabe? And since fascism as a term was first used by Mussolini I assumed, wrongly according to you, it was the home of fascism. Not clear or clear? Do we go round this particular mulberry bush singing for enlightenment from Lord Kumbaya once more? "learn how to use the past tense and present tense. ..."Yes please, I want to. Any passably good grammarian reading this blog? Why have you not completed ‘it was firstly used? It says :...The name was first used by the party started by Benito Mussolini . By this definition the Soviet Union, China, Saddam Hussein and many more were or are fascist. But the name was first used by Mussolini and Mussolini was the ruler of Italy. So I assumed wrongly, by your lights, that Italy WAS the home of fascism. Great education. Thank you again.. This follower of Lord Kumbaya confesses to finding it difficult to get the sense of what you are trying to say in most of your replies in this post (you don't have to say it, stupidity, yes? cretinous sounds a bit better) Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
