Kattey: you are absolutely correct in singling out the British, the protectorate of the former Ottoman Empire (along with France), for arbitrarily establishing Arab countries as being, at least, partly responsible for creating the current, internecine fighting in the ME as a consequence of their HOWEVER, Britain did something far worse than breaking their promise to an Arabian sheik.

Disregarding international law and the mandate of both their own government and the League of Nations (that became the United Nations) by:

1. Gouging out 80 percent of the land MANDATED to become the JEWISH NATIONAL HOMELAND and giving it to the relative of King Faisal after this Hashemite hothead threw a hissy-fit when Faisal got Iraq instead of him.

2. Severely restricting Jews (as in "banning") from migrating to existing Jewish settlements in "Mandated Palestine" (aka, the mandated JEWISH NATIONAL HOMELAND) while at the same time, looking the other way as wave after wave of undocumented Arabs flooded into Jewish-owned land, including 3,000 year-old settlements that had been continuously occupied by Jews.

3. Looking the other way while Arabs committed pogrom after pogrom against the Jews. The 1929 Arab "revolt" that purged Hebron of its entire Jewish population, and the 1936-39 Arab "riots" that left hundreds dead are but a few examples of British complicity in Arab atrocities in exchange for oil rights.

It might come as a surprise to many that, if there were a scale of governmental Anti-Semitism in the first half of the 20th Century, the British would have likely been ranked second only to the Third Reich.
