Your Article Gives Me the ShiversReader comment on item: Thoughts on the Start of Israeli-Palestinian "Proximity Talks" Submitted by John W. McGinley (United States), May 10, 2010 at 13:48 Your article gives me the shivers. Everything is wrong about this "process." Nero played the fiddle while Rome burned. Netanyahu seems to be a man who is ashamed of himself and ashamed of Israel while the nation slips into mortal danger. A number of articles ago you pointed to Begin as a leader who was neither ashamed of himself nor ashamed of Israel. Those were the days. I know that you fault Sharon for his unilateral withdrawal from the Gaza. I see that differently. In any case if Sharon were the Prime Minister he too would not stand for the way our President insulted the Prime MInister of Israel. And in the mean time Iran forges ahead towards nuclear armament. This is indeed a dark hour for Israel. And, again. I have to ask. What exactly was going on when Biden was visiting Israel and the news broke about the plan to build in Jerusalem? Was this orchestrated by Natanyahu himself? What a stupid thing to do to have this announcment sprung on our Vice-President just when he, the VP, was going out of his way to publically assure the Israeli (and American) public that Amercica was Israel's ally and could count on America's traditional support fir Israel. Obama would never have dared to insult Netanyahu in the manner he did if this insult had not been visited upon our Vice-President. OR -- and this would be worse -- did the announcement surprise Netanyahu himself as much as it surprised the VP? This would mean that Netanyahu was being sabotaged by the right wing of his own coalition. Either way there was incompetancy. And it seemed to weaken Natanyahu the man. This is a indeed a dark hour for Israel. And where is Rahm Emanuel in all this? It would be tragic if the present slide in the fortunes of Israel were being orchestrated by a man too clever for his -- or Israel's -- own good. From Obama I do not expent anything useful. But if Obama is getting support from Emanuel in what he is doing, such would be tragic. Rahm: It is time to turn Obama around. And if you can't, you should resign with a public flourish combined with a public and incisive critique against Obama's attitude towards Israel. Working from the inside only works if it is working. If it ain't working it makes matters worse. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes. Original writing only, please.
