Newt Gingrich's Got It Right - No ButsReader comment on item: Newt Gingrich and the "Invented" Palestinian People Submitted by M. Tovey (United States), Dec 13, 2011 at 19:13 Human temporal history teaches that humanity is as much of a function of identity and a place to call 'home.' Whether one recalls a Biblical account (as does this reader) or some other rationale to discuss humans and their nascent places, all have to follow a historical trail to a point of beginning. In the case of this narrative about Newt Gingrich's stand about the 'Palestinian' and a 'Palestinian' homeland, his being correct is yet another example of wanting to set the record straight in the face of contradictions. Of a course, the 'Palestinian' community has taken whatever steps they believe necessary to reconcile the obvious facts with their determination to gain something they were never really guaranteed in the first place. Even in spite of the British interference during their 'mandate period,' the British could never solve the question because they did not fully understand the significance of Allenby's entry into Jerusalem. They could not, because they believed not. For some, there was even the appearance of a crusader's mentality, that if Britannia ruled the waves, they ruled the world; yet something was lost when Victoria died seventeen years or so earlier. The name "Palestine" is older than the British use for the mandate; but it was an indiscriminate name for the land of Israeli kings and the fortunes of other empires after the Romans had suppressed the Jewish presence after the time of the Jewish Messiah's prediction of the destruction of the Temple. But just as the destruction was pronounced, so too was the return of the people Israel under circumstance that still baffle so many as to why this must be so contentious. Nations are not invented. Governments are convened to bring order to a people, whether ethnically bound in common descent (Israel) or by edict of one power or another (Yugoslavia) for the sake of the intent of peace. Wars come when the powers are challenged. Palestine is a place more than it is a people. It has a history as fragmented as any in the annals of the human temporal existence; and for it to be thought to coalesce around the Arab speaking people's only is one of a modern mentality for the evidences to the contrary abound is a way no other place can possibly imitate. That Newt Gingrich summarized his perspective of the situation (in a way this reader can assimilate to) is politically charged for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the 'Palestinian' cause's attempt to get the United Nations community to reverse the May 1948 action and allow the 'Palestinian' cause for acquiring statehood at the cost of Israel to claim Jewish land for themselves. Were Mr. Gingrich to press the situation further, the circumstances of the next president trying to get America back on good terms with Israel will likely be the determinant cause for whether the United States can weather the backlash of turning our backs on Israel, something no nation before or since will be able survive if we do not.
